Baptised at Aubigne on 8 March 1739, a son of Rene Courteau, bordager of les Chaussees, and Anne Hurteloup. He is very likely the Rene Courteau described in 1758 at Sarce as a young man, cousin paternel of the parish of Aubigne, standing godfather to Jean's daughter Marie Magdelaine, though the act does not give his father's name.
