Baptised at Coulonge in 1707, the eldest son. He married Anne Hurteloup at Aubigne on 3 June 1738, a daughter of the late Pierre Hurteloup and Anne Hardouin. The act names his parents as Rene Courteau and the late Marie Metaireau, the same pair named at Jean's baptism in 1710 and at Jean's marriage in 1741, and it has his father present and signing the register R courtien while the priest wrote Courteau. His brothers Pierre and Charles were there. He was a bordager, a smallholder, at les Chaussees in Aubigne, and his son Rene Charles Magdelon was baptised there in 1739. In 1750 the Aubigne priest wrote his name Courtien outright.
