Baptised at Sarce on 9 September 1763, a legitimate son of Jean Courtien and Madelaine Martineau. His godfather was a Michel Tertrain, two generations before his grandson married a Marie Tertrain. He married Anne Fontenay at Mayet on 30 May 1800, when he was thirty-seven and she twenty-seven; she was born at Sarce on 13 March 1773, a daughter of Julien Fontenay and Catherine Dufour. His brothers Jean and Charles were witnesses, with his brother-in-law Joseph Loiseau, who stood there on account of his wife Marie Courtien; her father and her uncle Michel Fontenay witnessed for the bride. Michel farmed at Sarce all his life and died there on 29 April 1841, the death reported by his son Michel, then thirty-three, and by Julien Richard of Coulonge, a nephew. Anne was still living. His death act names his own father as Charle rather than Jean, which the baptism and the marriage both show to be a clerk's slip: Charles was his brother.
