Born at Sarce at nine in the evening on 4 September 1807 and registered the next day, his father presenting him. The first witness was his uncle Jean Courtien, fifty, a farmer of the village. He reported his own father's death in 1841, giving his age as thirty-three. A weaver at the time of his second marriage and a farmer by 1847. He was a marchand in 1836 and a tisserand by 1839. His first wife, Adelaide Louise Legeay, died at Sarce on 23 April 1838, leaving him a son, Auguste Ferdinand, born in January 1836; thirteen months later, on 10 May 1839, he married Marie Tertrain, twenty-five and born in the same village, a daughter of Michel Tertrain and Marie Desnos. Her grandfather, another Michel Tertrain, was a witness at sixty-two. By 1869 the family had moved south to Tours, where both were still living when their children married. He and Marie had both died by July 1908, which their son Ariste's death act in Paris records.
